The Welcome that shapes the whole experience

As organisations work harder to make the workplace worth the journey, one of the most influential touchpoints is also one of the easiest to underestimate. ISS’ workplace experience benchmark shows that “Friendliness of the reception staff” is the best-performing service across 21 measured touchpoints, scoring 4.20 out of 5. “I feel welcome when entering the building” and “Atmosphere at the reception” both score 4.03. Based on 136,102 responses and more than 3.4 million data points from 2019 to 2025, the message is clear: people notice when reception works well.

The workplace has to earn the commute

In a hybrid world, the workplace is no longer the default setting for every task. For many employees, the day starts with a decision: Is it worth coming in?

That changes the role of every workplace touchpoint. Arrival, navigation, meetings, food, support services and informal interactions all shape whether time on site feels purposeful. Reception sits at the centre of many of these moments. It is where people are welcomed, guided, reassured and connected to the support they need.

From first impression to everyday confidence

Reception is often described as the first impression of an organisation, but that understates its role. For employees, it can provide clarity and practical help. For visitors and customers, it can build confidence before a meeting begins. For workplace leaders, it is a visible expression of culture, service quality and care.

The challenge is that reception is still often treated as a front desk function rather than a strategic workplace service. Trusted individuals may know the building, the people and the routines, but that familiarity can become fragile when demand changes, events require more support or service levels need to be aligned across multiple sites.

What stronger reception really depends on

A strong reception experience is not created by friendliness alone. It depends on the operating model behind the welcome: trained people, clear standards, reliable coverage, service governance and the ability to adapt to the daily rhythm of the workplace.

This matters because reception teams often become the people others turn to when something is unclear, unexpected or urgent. They help visitors find their way, support meetings, answer questions and reduce the small frictions that can shape how a workplace feels.

Strengthening a trusted touchpoint

ISS’ Welcome Plus service concept is designed to help clients strengthen reception as part of a more consistent and connected workplace experience. The focus is on combining human warmth with the structure needed to deliver reliably across changing workplace needs.

For clients moving from an in-house model, continuity matters. Receptionists are often trusted faces in the workplace, so change needs to protect the human connection people already value while giving teams stronger support, development and a broader workplace experience community.

When reception is warm, reliable and professionally supported, it does more than open the door. It helps shape a workplace experience employees can trust and value, while giving visitors a welcome that feels professional, supportive and unmistakably aligned with the organisation.
