ISS UK & Ireland gains 11 Distinctions in the International Safety Awards 2020

ISS business areas and clients are among just 87 organisations to win a Distinction in the 2020 International Safety Award for protecting its employees from the risk of injury and ill health at work

Overall, ISS gained a total of 28 awards with 14 ‘Merits’ and 3 ‘Passes’ in addition to the 11 Distinctions.

The ISS UK HQ, ‘Velocity’ in Weybridge, Surrey gained a Distinction, along with clients in industry sectors to include Telco, Hospitality & Food Services, Hotels, Financial Services and Education.

Now in their 62nd year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate establishments from around the world which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year. The awards also acknowledge organisations that have shown commitment to wellbeing and mental health at work.

Tim Proctor, Director of HSEQ & CR, ISS UK said, “I’m incredibly proud of the positive results achieved by everyone at ISS to achieve this record number of 11 Distinctions in the prestigious ISA awards in 2020. We strive to ingrain and maintain a positive safety culture at ISS through a strategy of continual improvement. With our ‘#ichoose2Bsafe’ and ‘Safety Stand-down’ campaigns to remind everyone to be extra-vigilant on their return from holidays, through to the Safety Leader, Safety Hero and Mental Health First Aid roles, we keep a constant focus on safety and wellbeing.”

Proctor concluded, “To say that I’m pleased is an understatement; every day I’m positively delighted by the hard work by all of our great people at ISS to ensure that we can keep to our stated intention to continuously improve the safety culture for Everyone in our organisation in Everything they do, Everytime that they do it.”

In 2020, 509 organisations won an International Safety Award. They span all sectors and are drawn from the United Kingdom, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. 87 organisations were awarded a Distinction, 250 organisations were awarded a Merit and 172 organisations achieved a Pass.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated ISS UK on their success in winning an International Safety Award 2020 with a Pass: “The British Safety Council commends the organization on their achievement. The award is in recognition of their commitment and efforts to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health.

“The vision of the British Safety Council is that no-one should be injured or made ill through their work – anywhere in the world. Realising it requires more than legislation; people committed to health and safety, and increasingly also to workplace wellbeing, make it a reality and inspire others to create workplaces that are a key force for good.”

About the International Safety Awards scheme

The International Safety Awards are open to organisations of all types, sizes and sectors in the UK and internationally, both members of the British Safety Council and non-members, and relate to the health and safety management at a specific site or business unit.

Applicants must answer a series of online questions about their management of health and safety risks during the previous year which are assessed by a team of independent chartered health and safety professionals. If the application meets the required standard, a pass, merit or – for really exceptional submissions – a distinction is awarded.

Selected high scoring winning organisations are shortlisted for additional ‘Sector Awards’ recognising outstanding sites and business units in up to 13 individual business sectors, as judged by the independent adjudicators.

The International Safety Awards scheme also features two awards to recognise exceptional individual performance of non-health and safety professionals who played a significant role keeping their work colleagues safe and healthy. These are the Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award, for personnel aged 25 or over, and the Young Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award, for personnel aged 16-24.

These allow organisations applying for an International Safety Award to nominate individual employees who have gone the extra mile to help protect the health, safety and welfare of their colleagues and others.

The winners of the Sector Awards and the Health and Safety Champion and Young Health and Safety Champion of the Year, as well as two new awards, Team of the Year Award and Bravery Award, will be announced at the International Safety Awards Gala Dinner.
