Apprenticeships at ISS

Steve is an ambassador for apprenticeships within ISS. He is currently studying a Leadership and Management Apprenticeship and reflects on the changes in the delivery and accessibility of apprenticeships over the past 30 years.

Steve’s apprenticeship journey

In the late 1980s I completed a traditional apprenticeship to become an electrician with a local company. A team of electricians helped me with the ‘on-the-job training’ elements, whilst I learned the theory and skills through attending classroom and workshop-based learning at a technical college on block release.

30 years later, I’m now completing an ILM Level 3 Apprenticeship in leadership and management with ISS-partnered training provider, Learnmore. The course is being fully funded by the ISS Apprenticeship Levy and my on-site colleagues at ISS are supporting me with useful guidance and experiences, as my fellow electricians did on site 30 years ago. However, the key change is that the ‘classrooms’ are now virtual and learning resources and activities are done through a easy-to-use online platform.

I’ve felt supported at every step. My manager has helped me to balance my apprenticeship alongside my role. I also have the full support of a Learnmore learning partner who I can contact through a variety of channels.

In combining traditional on-the-job experience with modern long distance learning, today’s apprentices can approach their course with freedom and flexibility. Better yet, this approach makes apprenticeships more accessible to a wider range of talent.
