David Brandes, Head of Business Partnering – Procurement, at ISS explains why studying a higher degree apprenticeship was a ‘life changing, highly rewarding and transformational experience’ for him and why apprenticeships aren’t just for career starters.

In my current role, I manage a team of five procurement business partners who provide end-to-end supply chain and procurement expertise across our Bids and Mobilisations divisions as well as four of our key accounts.

Our team acts as a conduit, establishing a flow between Procurement and the wider business to ensure our central procurement activity is providing the business and our customers with a fit for purpose supply chain solution. Given the broad nature of the role, I am required to manage a diverse range of key stakeholders and balance the needs of our customers and operational teams, while operating within the parameters of our procurement strategy to drive compliance and de-risk our operation.

After gaining more than a decade’s experience of working within a business environment, I wanted to add best practice theory, knowledge, and learnings across a broad set of functional business areas to my existing on the job experience. In particular, I wanted to be able to understand the key principles of each functional area, from accounting, marketing, sales, to sustainability, innovation and new venture creation. The Level 7 Apprenticeship Executive MBA via Cranfield Management School represented a fantastic opportunity for me to widen my knowledge and challenge myself at the top level.

Through my apprenticeship I developed my knowledge of strategy, innovation, finance and business change. I also gained valuable skills in people development and establishing collaborative relationships. The learnings have been immensely valuable and easy to deploy into my everyday work.

Above all, my apprenticeship has taken me out of my comfort zone and boosted my confidence in my ability to operate at a senior level, as well as develop my all-round leadership capabilities.

Apprenticeships can provide a valuable development step at any stage of your career. For me, undertaking an apprenticeship was a lifechanging experience as I found my knowledge and confidence develop throughout the course. It’s really helped me to grow professionally and, as a result, I can better support my team members in growing their careers too.

I would encourage anyone looking to develop their career to consider a development route through a degree or higher-level apprenticeship. Select a course that best suits your knowledge and career development objectives and just go for it!
