Smart waste scale project

The rising costs of waste disposal, especially clinical waste, prompted us to seek smarter solutions. In partnership with Shrunk, we’ve implemented smart waste scales across hospital loading docks. This technology provides accurate waste tracking and transparency, so that we can optimise waste streams and reduce unnecessary costs.

Optimising waste management with technology

How it works

Integrated technology: We’ve installed scales, a barcode tool, and a user-friendly dashboard to monitor bin use and track waste volume in real-time.

Invoice verification: The barcode tool helps verify invoices by ensuring that clinical waste bin data – such as accuracy, weights, and collection details – are correct. This likely reduces errors, prevents overcharging, and ensures compliance with waste management regulations.

Tangible results: This project has delivered significant savings on clinical waste costs while providing substantial returns to our client through improved accuracy. In addition to reducing expenses, it is enhancing recycling rates and encouraging responsible waste disposal.

Meal waste AI tracking

Our second project addresses food waste in hospital kitchens by implementing AI-powered tracking of patient meal trays. By analysing returned meals, we aim to better understand nutritional needs and optimise menu planning. This initiative not only minimises landfill waste but also enables the reuse of unopened portion-controlled menu items.

Reducing landfill waste and enhancing meal planning

How it works

AI-powered monitoring: A camera installed above the return-food-tray waste line captures images every 30 seconds.

Data analysis: AI analysis of these images tracks single-use food items, untouched trays and disposed-of meal components.

Key findings:

  • 16% of trays contained pre-packaged re-usable items
  • Daily meal service wastage rates: 2.9% for breakfast, 11.8% for lunch and 15.3% for dinner
  • The data presents an opportunity to optimise menu planning and provides insights indicating that patients may be receiving excessive portions at dinner

Through these initiatives, ISS Pacific demonstrates a focused approach to integrating sustainable solutions within our operations.

The use of advanced technology and data analysis helps us to actively contribute to environmental stewardship and add value for our clients. We remain committed to continuously advancing our sustainable facility management practices.
