Lauren Bowen Shortlisted for the Innovation Award at Contract Catering Awards 2023
The event, taking place on March 27th, Leonardo Royal Hotel, celebrates the experts and enterprises who have demonstrated dedication, innovation and service excellence in catering.

Lauren Bowen, Head of Patient Food Services ISS UK&I, joins four more contestants in the running for the Innovation Award, celebrating the products and initiatives that transform catering services - and Lauren’s contributions to The Great Nutrition Project are testament to how ISS continues to put patients first.
The Great Nutrition Project was launched by the ISS Patient Catering & Dietetic Team, fundamentally developing the front-line catering service in the 40+ NHS Trusts where ISS provides patient food and beverage services. Among numerous industry concerns around nutrition and hydration safety issues, such as choking hazards and allergies, the project sought to improve the nutritional safety and patient experience, with nutritional knowledge, morale, and confidence at the forefront.
The preliminary research behind the project was extensive, including:
- Over 80 hours or research including observations of ISS staff, input from NHS frontline workers and discussions with NHS patients
- Catering focus sessions that included ISS catering managers, supervisors, and trainers.
- The development and trial of a ward-end Patient Catering Assessment Tool, designed to capture behaviours and nutritional adherences.
As a result of this research, the ISS Patient Catering & Dietetic Team has introduced extensive measures benefitting staff, customers, and patients. In recent awareness audits:
- Staff knowledge had risen by 50%
- Patient satisfaction averaged at 94%
- Plate waste had dropped to just 10%, saving on the cost of food wastage.
As a long-running NHS partner and provider for over 40 NHS trusts, ISS is once again proud to be recognised as a trusted FM provider for the UK’s patients and practitioners.
