Red Cross and ISS Denmark welcome marginalized families to summer camp

For the 7th year, ISS and the Red Cross in Denmark have hosted a summer camp for marginalised families, where parents can form networks with people in the labour market.
115 parents, children and volunteers participated in the summer camp in Hillerød, Denmark, from 29 June to 2 July. The participants were families who, for various reasons, are in a vulnerable situation. This may be due to poor finances, physical or mental health problems, lack of social networking or other reasons. ISS Denmark covered the costs, and ISS staff were responsible for organising and running the camp.

Over four days, volunteers and families participated in sports, arts and crafts, and campfire activities. Parents also had the opportunity to strengthen their professional contacts by networking with volunteers from ISS.

Lotte Hjortlund Andersen, Director of People & Culture, ISS Denmark, said:

“We know how important it is to establish new relationships and networks to get a footing in the job market. That’s why we see the summer camp as more than an opportunity for marginalized children and adults to take a break from their everyday lives. It’s also an opportunity to build stronger ties to the job market, where ISS participants serve as positive role models.”

The Red Cross has noted that each year more and more families apply to join their summer camps, as parents often lack the means to give their children a holiday experience. In line with families' increased needs, the number of Red Cross summer camps has increased from 4 in 2005 to 16 throughout Denmark in 2017.

Hanna Line Jakobsen, President of the Red Cross Denmark, said:

“It is crucial for all children to be able to talk about their summer holiday plans. It helps to secure their place in the community at kindergarten and at school."
