This year’s biggest event in the facility management industry took place on October 15-17 in Dallas, Texas, where the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) held the ‘World Workplace 2008 Conference and Expo’. It is an annual three-day educational and networking event focussing on the future of the Facility Management environment. IFMA is one of the largest and most widely recognised professional associations for facility management with more than 19,000 members in 60 countries. Therefore ISS decided to support the conference and Expo as ISS wants to lead the expansion and development of this industry.
IFMA designed the ‘World Workplace Expo’ as a collaborative forum for facility managers and those in related fields to discuss, evaluate, share and grow, both personally and professionally. The ‘World Workplace Expo’ experience includes a conference focused entirely on education and a unique tradeshow that incorporates product demonstration and instruction. The conference draws attendees from all over the world and from a variety of workplace-related industries including: technology, engineering, architecture, design, security, real estate and facility management.
ISS had designed a large booth for the expo where the visitors could learn much more about ISS – A World of Service. The visitors also had opportunities to talk business with one of our many national and international ISS sales people at the booth. There was a great interest in ISS and our capabilities, and we had the pleasure of presenting ISS’ many service solutions locally, as well as globally, to the many visitors and customers.

ISS had arranged a competition ‘World Trip Giveaway’ at IFMA. The visitors who attended our booth had the opportunity to win a vacation to one of the 50 countries where ISS are represented. The ‘World Trip Giveaway’ winner was facility lead Mrs Teresa Miles from Accenture in Texas. Teresa Miles was surprised and very happy when here name was called. Immediately, she announced that she would go to one of ISS’ 50 countries together with her granddaughter. She would like to visit Greece or perhaps Italy, however, 50 countries is a lot to choose from, and she told the crowd that she would spend some time considering where to go before making the final decision.

On the last day of the Conference CEO, Joergen Lindgaard, gave a speech for the audience. He presented the ISS vision, and how ISS has gradually become a world wide provider of facility management solution, represented in 5 continents and 50 Countries. CEO, Joergen Lindegaard, said that he was very pleased that ISS are back in the United States and that we are looking forward to the challenges in this market. The US market is huge and exciting to be a part of, and this time ISS is ready for the challenges. Amongst the audience there was the ISS US Management Team. “I am very pleased by the joint effort between corporate and the US organization in influencing the FM agenda” said ISS US Country Manager Darrel Glover.

ISS sponsored the closing keynote speaker, Dr. Jonas Ridderstråle. He is the bestseller author behind “Funky Business Forever” and visiting professor at Ashridge Business School in the U.K; this is in addition to being advisor and consultant to a number of multinational corporations. His book offers thinking and commentary on the state of business in the latter half of this decade.
“You can respond to the business challenges of today’s world in two different ways,” said Ridderstråle. “You can retreat into your own foxhole and be constantly surprised by today’s global economy. Or you can focus on being the surprise, the shocker of your industry — being the change you want to see. As anyone who attends ‘World Workplace Expo’ knows, you don’t have to be an economic expert to realise there is a lot to be won by taking a global perspective.”
