Help to workers in need

In 1940 the firm established a Welfare Department to assist the workers with social problems and thereby assuring a more stable workforce. The department was run by the nurse, Gerda Buhl. She spent much of her time visiting the cleaners at home, looking into their problems and trying to help wherever possible. Miss Buhl, as she was known, possessed a strong social commitment and made an enormous contribution to improving working life for the cleaning personnel.

The firm's welfare work was wide-ranging and included issues ranging from loan arrangements to family counselling, housing provision and payment of sickness benefits to those infected with tuberculosis. Miss Buhl also helped the workers with much-needed holidays. In 1956, the cleaning workers acquired their own holiday house near Gilleleje in Northern Zealand.

Miss Buhl spent much of her time talking to the cleaning workers about their conditions and gained a clear insight into their, often hard, lives.
